Melbourne is a diverse city, there are more than 170 languages and culture, the food here is amazing, you can get anything you can think of.

Melbourne sux.
Its CBD is sad vs that of Sydney. Its famed lanes are not particularly interesting except for small eateries. But Melbourne CBD SUCKS in a big way. Eateries in Sydney are much better than Melbourne.
The 12 Apostles are over 150km from Melbourne so isn't not Melbourne at all. I don't know why people see it as Melbourne. You need a car to get there for a day trip.
Frankly, the drive there is more worthwhile than the 10 sandstone oddies on the shore. Yes, there are only 10 of the original 12 standing left.
Meat pies are best eaten on cold days as a snack.

I am from Melbourne Australia. If you asked me about the food in Melbourne, I would also recommend other cuisines and not the Australian food LOL.
Go to Lygon St Carlton, I personally think it has the best Italian and Thai food there.
